Dr Celsus MD

The earliest surviving major medical treatise written in Latin, and the earliest Western history of medicine, is Celsus's De medicina: The Vatican Library has just digitized the Vat.lat.5951: This codex, known as V, and a similar 9th-century copy in Florence, plus another now lost, ensured De medicina survived the Middle Ages.

The author, Aulus Cornelius Celsus, who lived from c.25 BCE to c.50 CE, probably in Gallia Narbonensis, is presumed to have been a physician himself. Jeremy Norman calls this book the oldest western medical document after the Hippocratic writings.

Crusader Kingdom

If you follow Middle Eastern politics, you will certainly have heard of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, a crusader colonial state established in the Southern Levant in 1099 after the First Crusade, destroyed in 1187, refounded five years later and surviving until the sack of Acre in 1291.

Its two centuries of conflict with the Muslim inhabitants of the region (and local Christians and Jews) have left long scars on memory and served as models of misunderstanding ever since.

Two of the codices recently brought online in black and white by the Vatican Library have a major bearing on this kingdom. One is the Lignages d'Outremer, describing the pedigrees of the most important Crusader families. This document is a main source in understanding efforts to create a Christian kingdom at Jerusalem, and the West's early war with Islam.

The other is the Cartulary of the Chapter of the Holy Sepulchre, a celebrated record of Crusader Jerusalem made 1162-1165 in the first period. A couple of days ago, we noted the arrival online of a third key source, the sole record of the 1120 Council of Nablus which established some of the Christian kingdom's laws.

Euclid's Optics

Another of the fantastically important science manuscripts of the Vatican Library has just come online: Vat.gr.204 is the oldest and best manuscript of a collection of early Greek astronomical works, mostly elementary, by Autolycus, Euclid, Aristarchus, Hypsicles and Theodosius, as well as mathematical works. While the Vatican's most priceless Euclid volume came online a year ago, this was the supplementary one so many have been waiting for.

Following Rome Reborn, I show above Proposition 13, which is accompanied by many scholia, concerned with the ratio to the diameters of the moon and sun of the line subtending the arc dividing the light and dark portions of the moon in a lunar eclipse. The work is thus a basis for Euclidean optics.

The following list of 64 items comprises new scans at high-resolution, and briefly interrupts the multi-part list of low-res black-and-white scans from the Vat.lat. series that I will continue in the next few days.

This is, by the way, Piggin's Unofficial List number 100. Given the enormous rush of manuscripts recently, I am not sure how to keep up the pace. I can no longer cover every new arrival. But we will find some kind of ad-hoc solution to keep most readers of this blog happy.
